Apple Targets 2027 for In-House Modem Debut in M6 iPad Pro

Apple is reportedly planning to bring its custom-designed cellular modems to the M6 iPad Pro lineup, aiming for a 2027 launch window.
Apple's journey into creating its own cellular modems is set to expand beyond the iPhone, with reports indicating the technology will land in a future iPad Pro. Specifically, the M6-powered iPad Pro is pegged as the next device to adopt Apple's custom modem chips, with a target release year of 2027.
This move signifies a continuation of Apple's strategy to replace third-party components, in this case, the Qualcomm modems currently used in cellular-enabled iPads, with its own internally developed hardware. The first generation of Apple's modem, reportedly named C1, made its debut in the iPhone 16e.
While considered a solid first step into the market, early versions of Apple's modem technology are noted to lack support for mmWave 5G. Development is understood to be ongoing to enhance the modem's capabilities for future flagship-level performance.
It's worth noting that the M6 iPad Pro isn't the very next model expected. Before that arrives, Apple is anticipated to release an M5-equipped iPad Pro, potentially hitting the market as early as late 2025. The plan for the M6 version with the integrated Apple modem represents a longer-term roadmap target for 2027.
