United Airlines equips 636 planes with Starlink, adds flight tracker

United Airlines has equipped 636 of its 1,492 aircraft with SpaceX's Starlink satellite Wi-Fi and launched a digital tracking tool that lets passengers verify whether their upcoming flight carries the service, TechRadar reported on October 15, 2026.

The installation milestone covers 43 percent of United's fleet and nearly half of its daily departures, serving more than 250,000 passengers per day. Available on the carrier's website and mobile app, the new Starlink Wi-Fi Tracker allows flyers to look up connectivity status by flight number and date up to three days before departure. The airline is installing the low-Earth orbit satellite hardware on approximately 20 planes per week and expects to complete its fleetwide rollout by the end of 2027.

According to TechRadar, United's active Starlink deployments consist of 351 regional jets, 280 narrowbody mainline planes, and five widebody aircraft. Data from United's official tracker on October 15 showed the widebody count rising to six aircraft alongside 282 narrowbody planes. The tracking dashboard breaks down hardware installation progress across 11 aircraft families, including the Boeing 787, 777, 767, 757, 737, and 737 Max; the Airbus A321 (including Neo and XLR variants), A320, and A319; and Embraer E-175 and Bombardier CRJ regional jets.

Travelers can also view the percentage of daily departures operating with Starlink across United's seven US hubs. According to United's tracker data, Chicago O'Hare leads with 54 percent of flights equipped (351 daily flights), followed by Denver at 53 percent (309 flights), Los Angeles at 46 percent (67 flights), Houston at 45 percent (225 flights), Newark at 44 percent (173 flights), Washington Dulles at 43 percent (120 flights), and San Francisco at 36 percent (116 flights).

While regional and domestic narrowbody routes account for the vast majority of completed retrofits, most of United's long-haul widebody fleet has yet to receive the upgrade. Many of those aircraft still rely on legacy Panasonic satellite systems, which Zach Griff, author of the travel newsletter From the Tray Table, described as among the slowest and least reliable in the industry. "On recent cross-country flights, I had multiple hours-long periods when I couldn't establish a strong enough connection to send more than a text," Griff wrote, as cited by TechRadar.

Starlink Wi-Fi on United flights is free for MileagePlus loyalty members, which requires a free account registration. Alongside the tracker release, United extended its "Switch to Better Wi-Fi" status-match promotion through October 22, 2026. The program allows eligible Delta Air Lines and American Airlines frequent flyers to retain matched United Premier status through January 2028 by meeting spending thresholds ranging from $1,500 for Premier Silver up to $7,000 for higher tiers.

United's rapid deployment and public tracking tool put pressure on competing US carriers that are still in the early stages of adopting low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity, including American Airlines, which plans to begin equipping more than 1,030 aircraft with Starlink in early 2027.
